Elevator Pitches
Eighth Street is a community of diverse disabled adults, with limited financial resources, who live as a family in homes that provide opportunities to enable them to grow and engage in OUR community.
“Eighth Street provides homes, care, and a true sense of family for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.”
“Eighth Street Community is a family-style home for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities who have very limited financial resources. We operate four houses here in Huntsville, with space for 25 residents, supported by 22 staff and over 200 volunteers each year.
Our residents live with diagnoses such as autism, intellectual disabilities, or schizophrenia, and most also face secondary challenges like anxiety or depression. Despite the level of care they need — which costs about $42,000 per person annually — the average resident only receives about $800 a month in income. That means 90% require full or partial donor funding to stay in their home.
What makes Eighth Street special is that it’s not an institution — it’s a community. Our residents live as family, share meals, learn life skills, and participate in Huntsville life. And every donor and volunteer helps make that possible.”
“You know how hard it can be for adults with disabilities to find a real home and community? That’s what Eighth Street does. We’ve got four houses here in Huntsville where 25 adults live together like family.
They get meals, medical support, life-skills training, and — just as important — the chance to really be part of our community. The tough part is that the average resident only has about $800 a month in income, but their care costs around $3,500. So almost all of them rely on donors to make it possible.
At the end of the day, Eighth Street isn’t just about housing — it’s about belonging, dignity, and giving people the chance to live full lives.”
